While the first graders are studying farmers markets in their classrooms, they are learning, here in art class, how to look at fruits and veggies with their keen artistic eyes.
By identifying the elements and principles of art & design that should be kept in mind when observing something in art, students were able to focus on how to draw three versions of each fruit that was placed in front of them. Students listed shape, form, color, texture, and pattern as the elements and principles they needed to focus on. The fruits they have worked with so far are apples & oranges (there will be many more to come!).
After staring, longingly, at these fresh and delicious items, students were offered a slice to snack on as a reward for a job well done!
