Fourth Graders are Positive (…and Negative)

Several of the projects we work on in fourth grade deal with elements, images and/or concepts from nature. In one, we created impermanent sculptures in the style of Andy Goldsworthy and in another we created up-close drawings of flowers and shells, inspired by O’Keeffe. The last of the ‘nature’ themed projects dealt simply with the balance between light and dark.
These are called Notan collages and are cut paper that is arranged to create a balance between the positive and negative space on the paper. Students were challenged to self-assess their scissor cutting skills and then design a composition that would be interesting for the viewer and yet possible for them to create.
